Pakistan has launched a nationwide polio vaccination campaign targeting 45 million children under five, following a concerning rise in new cases. Despite regular efforts, Pakistan remains one of only two countries where polio has yet to be eradicated. The campaign will run for a week, during which health workers will go door-to-door, vaccinating young children and providing them with Vitamin A supplements to strengthen immunity.

However, these efforts face serious risks, as health workers and their police escorts are often threatened or attacked by militants who falsely claim the vaccination drive is a Western ploy to harm children. This misinformation has fueled violence, adding a significant challenge to eradicating polio.

Ayesha Raza Farooq, an adviser to the prime minister on polio eradication, stated that the increase in cases has brought a new urgency to their work. She emphasized the government’s dedication to reaching every child, despite the difficulties. This campaign marks Pakistan’s third attempt this year, underscoring its commitment to overcoming the obstacles that have stalled progress in making the country polio-free.
